Marketing Sr. Director of Digital Marketing (Direct-to-Consumer, Reproductive Healthcare) at Upstream USA

Leads direct-to-consumer digital marketing strategy and execution for a reproductive healthcare nonprofit, driving patient acquisition and engagement across multiple channels.

Exec Posted about 10 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

Organizational Summary

Contraceptive care is basic healthcare. Yet too many patients in the U.S. struggle to access the care they need, when they need it. Founded in 2014, Upstream USA is a national, nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that equitable, patient-centered contraceptive care is available to everyone.

Our Mission and Impact

Upstream works to ensure individuals can make fully informed, autonomous decisions about the contraceptive methods that are best for them. We are currently the largest contraceptive organization in the country improving contraceptive care in primary care settings, operating in 37 states and Washington, D.C.

While our foundational work focuses on partnering with healthcare organizations offering primary care, such as federally qualified healthcare centers (FQHC) and health systems, we are always evolving. We are actively pursuing additional, innovative paths to ensure every patient has streamlined access to the contraceptive service of their choice, where and when it is most convenient for them.

A Different Kind of Nonprofit

Supported entirely by venture philanthropy, Upstream operates with a culture of aggressive growth and a laser focus on measurable outcomes. To maintain our independence and nonpartisan stance, we do not accept funding from the government or pharmaceutical companies.

  • Our 2030 Goal: We are on a mission to partner with organizations that collectively reach 5 million patients of reproductive age.
  • Recognition: We are a 2023 Audacious Project recipient, with our work featured in publications like Harvard Public Health, Bloomberg, and MedPage Today.

We welcome individuals who are driven by impact and scale to join us in making equitable contraceptive access a reality for all.

About Upstream Digital

Upstream Digital is the innovation arm of Upstream USA, a national nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that all people have equitable access to the full range of contraceptive care. We believe that access to birth control should be easy, patient-centered, and—above all—free.

As reproductive healthcare faces increasing pressure, the traditional ways of accessing care are often no longer enough. Research shows that patients want their birth control through multiple, flexible channels, yet nearly 1 in 10 low-income women still discontinue their preferred method due to cost. Upstream Digital was created to bridge this gap by building modern, technology-forward solutions that meet patients exactly where they are.

Our Mission: FreeBC

Our flagship initiative, FreeBC, is an innovative digital platform designed to remove every barrier between a patient and their reproductive health choices. We combine evidence-based education with direct access to care through a seamless, bilingual (English and Spanish) experience.

  • Integrated Care: We provide a direct line to both virtual and in-person services. Through our telehealth partners, patients can access pills, patches, rings, and more, while our network of local clinics provides provider-dependent methods like IUDs and implants.
  • Empowered Choice: Using a custom-trained, empathetic AI tool, clinician-led videos, and human navigators, we provide neutral information so patients can feel confident in the method that works best for them.
  • True Accessibility: We eliminate the financial burden. The costs of both the medical visits and the contraceptive methods are 100% covered by Upstream USA, ensuring that FreeBC users never pay out of pocket.

Position Summary

Upstream USA is seeking a strategic, data-driven Sr. Director of Digital Marketing to lead the growth and evolution of Free BC, our direct-to-consumer (D2C) digital platform. Reporting to the Head of Digital Product, this leader will serve as the marketing strategist for Free BC, translating organizational priorities into high-impact marketing strategies that drive awareness, engagement, and access to care.

This role will lead the evolution of Free BC from a test-and-learn initiative to a scalable national program, developing integrated marketing strategies that effectively reach and engage individuals seeking contraceptive care—particularly historically underserved and vulnerable populations. The Director will oversee external agency partners, optimize multi-channel digital marketing campaigns, establish performance metrics, and use data-driven insights to continuously improve marketing effectiveness and return on investment.

In addition to leading day-to-day marketing strategy, this individual will play a key role in shaping Upstream’s long-term digital marketing capabilities. They will help define the future marketing operating model, build scalable processes, and recommend organizational structures that support the continued growth of Free BC alongside Upstream’s existing provider-focused (B2B) initiatives. The ideal candidate is a collaborative and innovative marketing leader with deep expertise in direct-to-consumer marketing, digital acquisition, agency management, and building high-performing marketing functions within a mission-driven organization.

This is a 12 month fixed-term role with the possibility of extension.

Marketing Strategy & Growth

  • Develop and lead the comprehensive direct-to-consumer (D2C) marketing strategy for Free BC, aligning marketing priorities with organizational goals, growth objectives, and measurable business outcomes.
  • Create and maintain a multi-year marketing roadmap with clear objectives, key performance indicators (KPIs), and success metrics across paid, earned, owned, and community-based marketing channels.
  • Lead the evolution of Free BC from a pilot initiative to a scalable national program through disciplined planning, prioritization, and execution.

Audience Acquisition & Engagement

  • Design and execute evidence-based marketing strategies that effectively engage diverse and historically underserved populations, including individuals with low incomes, rural communities, Spanish-speaking audiences, and others who face barriers to contraceptive access.
  • Develop audience segmentation strategies, customer journeys, and personalized messaging that improve awareness, engagement, and conversion across digital and community channels.
  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders to identify innovative, culturally responsive approaches that increase awareness and utilization of Free BC.

Performance Marketing & Optimization

  • Establish a robust test-and-learn framework that continuously evaluates campaign performance, identifies opportunities for optimization, and scales successful initiatives
  • Develop meaningful marketing dashboards and performance metrics that emphasize mission impact, customer acquisition, engagement, conversion, retention, and return on investment rather than vanity metrics.
  • Use qualitative and quantitative insights to continuously refine marketing strategies and improve outcomes for priority populations.

Agency & Vendor Leadership

  • Serve as the strategic lead for all external marketing agencies and vendors, providing direction, establishing clear performance expectations, and ensuring work aligns with organizational priorities.
  • Evaluate agency performance and, when appropriate, lead the sourcing, selection, contracting, onboarding, and ongoing management of agency partners.
  • Ensure agency deliverables reflect best practices in digital acquisition, creative development, analytics, and campaign optimization.

Organizational Leadership

  • Partner with senior leadership to define the long-term vision for Upstream’s digital marketing capabilities and recommend organizational structures, staffing models, and operational processes that support sustainable growth.
  • Build scalable marketing operations, governance, and workflows that enable Free BC to grow alongside Upstream’s provider-focused (B2B) marketing efforts while maintaining a dedicated consumer marketing strategy.
  • Collaborate across Product, Clinical, Technology, Policy, Communications, and Program teams to ensure marketing strategies support organizational priorities and deliver a consistent consumer experience.

Executive Communication & Thought Partnership

  • Present marketing strategies, performance insights, growth opportunities, and business recommendations to executive leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Develop compelling business cases supported by market research, consumer insights, and performance data to influence strategic decisions and investment priorities.
  • Serve as a thought partner on emerging consumer marketing trends, digital innovation, and opportunities to expand Free BC’s reach and impact.
  • Additional duties as assigned

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, Communications, Public Health, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 8-10+ years of progressive marketing leadership experience, including significant experience leading direct-to-consumer (D2C) digital marketing initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success building and scaling consumer-facing digital products or services from early-stage growth through broader market adoption, with measurable business outcomes.
  • Experience in healthcare, digital health, health technology, consumer technology, start-up organizations and mission-driven organizations strongly preferred.
  • Proven expertise developing integrated marketing strategies across paid media, lifecycle marketing, CRM, social media, content marketing, SEO/SEM, partnerships, and community engagement.
  • Strong experience managing external agencies, vendors, and strategic partners, including agency selection, contract management, and performance oversight.
  • Deep understanding of digital marketing analytics, attribution, conversion optimization, customer acquisition, audience segmentation, and marketing technology platforms.
  • Experience using consumer insights and data to reach underserved or historically marginalized populations through culturally responsive marketing strategies.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to communicate effectively to executive leadership, board members, partners, and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives, influence without direct authority, and drive alignment across multiple teams.

Attributes

  • Strategic Thinker: Anticipates future opportunities and develops scalable marketing strategies that balance short-term execution with long-term organizational growth.
  • Growth Mindset: Uses experimentation, data, and customer insights to continuously improve marketing performance and accelerate growth.
  • Innovative & Resourceful: Finds creative, cost-effective approaches to engage underserved communities and expand awareness of Free BC.
  • Collaborative Leader: B uilds strong relationships across departments and effectively aligns Product, Communications, Clinical, Technology, and external partners around shared goals.
  • Data-Driven Decision Maker: Uses performance data and customer insights to inform strategy, prioritize investments, and measure meaningful impact.
  • Mission-Driven: Passionate about advancing reproductive health equity and committed to expanding access to person-centered contraceptive care through innovative consumer engagement.
  • Inclusive Leader: Demonstrates cultural humility and designs marketing strategies that resonate with diverse audiences while reducing barriers to care.
  • Scrappy & Innovative: Thrives in fast-paced environments by doing more with less, finding practical, creative ways to achieve ambitious goals.

Travel Requirements

This role will require up to 15-20% business travel. All Upstreamers can expect a minimum of 8 days of business travel per year to attend 1 annual organizational retreat and 1 or 2 annual team/department meetings.

Hiring Range

$165,000—$180,000 USD

Pay Transparency

Final offers for this position will be based upon several factors including the scope of the role, market compensation analysis, position requirements, candidate’s experience level and capabilities, fairness in internal pay considerations and will be made within the parameters of Upstream USA’s compensation framework and philosophy.

Other Upstream Staff Expectations

  • All Upstreamers must be able to attend work-related in-person meetings and functions as needed.
  • In our hybrid work environments, there is a basic expectation that our Upstreamers will ensure that their work from home setups will have reliable access to phone and Internet to ensure connectivity to their teams.

We’re looking for a VP of Growth Marketing to own the marketing to revenue generation engine. This is a player-coach role: you’ll lead a team of 12+ product marketers, marketing channel experts, and growth marketers, owning product marketing for both our brand and creator audiences and, on the growth side, paid media, SEO/AEO, email and in-app lifecycle, CRO and web, and ABM. You’ll also carry work yourself, building the model, writing the brief, reading the attribution, and stepping directly into a channel when it needs a senior operator. You’ll own the growth marketing budget and be accountable for driving measurable action across the full customer journey, acquisition, retention, expansion, and reactivation, and for pipeline, signups, and revenue across all three lines of business (Later Influence, Later Social, and Creator/Affiliate). You’ll partner closely with Sales, Product, Product Marketing, RevOps, and Web, and you’ll have regular exposure to executive leadership. This role is ideally a hybrid position with 3 days in office in our Boston or New York hubs, but remote applicants are considered.

What you’ll be doing:

Growth strategy and ownership

  • Own Later’s growth marketing strategy end to end, connecting product marketing, demand generation, and lifecycle into one plan tied to pipeline and revenue targets.
  • Own and allocate the growth marketing budget across channels, defending investment decisions with clear efficiency, payback math, and investment increase recommendations.
  • Work with your Growth Marketing Managers to establish and refine the goals, KPIs, and reporting frameworks the function is measured on, and make the tradeoffs visible to senior leadership and executive teams.
  • Refine and build net new differentiated growth motions for each line of business, recognizing that enterprise SLG, self-serve social signups, and creator acquisition do not respond to the same playbook.
  • Set the annual and quarterly planning rhythm for the team, and connect it to the broader marketing calendar.

Team leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of roughly a dozen marketers across three groups: product marketing, digital marketing channel experts, and growth marketers.
  • Set clear ownership and success criteria for each person so channel specialists and segment-facing marketers pull in the same direction.
  • Raise the technical bar of the team on measurement, experimentation, and marketing technology.
  • Make thoughtful hiring and structure decisions as the org evolves, including new roles.
  • Create a culture of testing and learning where a failed experiment with a clean read is treated as a win.
  • Make AI a working part of how the team operates, setting the standard for where it accelerates research, campaign analysis, and lifecycle personalization, and where it doesn’t, so the team ships more efficiently without lowering the bar.
  • Work as a player-coach: own a channel or program directly when the team has a gap, and stay current enough in the tools that your feedback is specific rather than directional.

Channel and campaign execution

  • Direct paid media strategy across paid social, paid search, video, and display, holding the team accountable to efficiency targets.
  • Guide SEO and AEO strategy as search shifts toward AI answer engines, protecting and growing Later’s organic visibility.
  • Own strategy across email and in-app for both brand and creator audiences, driving signup to paid conversion, activation, and retention.
  • Drive conversion rate optimization and web strategy in partnership with Web and Product, treating later.com as a performance surface rather than a brochure.
  • Partner with the ABM and enterprise marketers to optimize existing and build net-new account-based programs that Sales actually uses, with a clean handoff and a shared definition of a qualified lead.
  • Partner with the creator sales team to optimize existing and build net-new ABM motions for mid to top tier creators
  • Ensure brand and product marketing work reinforces demand rather than running parallel to it.

Measurement and experimentation

  • Own attribution and marketing measurement in partnership with RevOps and MarketingOps, and continuously improve the accuracy of multi-channel impact.
  • Lead a quarterly testing roadmap tied to specific business metrics, with documented hypotheses, test design, and results.
  • Go deep on campaign and ad group performance while also summarizing clearly for an executive audience.
  • Ensure data flows cleanly between CRM, marketing automation, and analytics tools so decisions rest on numbers the team trusts.
  • Optimize our always on conversion funnel for each line of business. Proactively identify and close gaps in the funnel.

Cross-functional partnership

  • Partner with Sales and RevOps on pipeline targets, lead quality, routing, and a seamless handoff process.
  • Work with Product and Product Marketing so campaigns reflect real product capability and land in step with launches.
  • Collaborate with the Creator team so creator acquisition and education programs feed the same growth model as brand demand.
  • Represent growth marketing performance to senior leadership with clarity about what is working, what is not, and what you are changing.

What you bring:

  • 10+ years in growth, demand generation, or performance marketing, with experience owning a multi-million dollar budget and a revenue number.
  • 5+ years leading and developing marketing teams, including managing managers or senior specialists through ambiguity and change.
  • A genuine player-coach: you’ve led a team and personally owned execution at the same time, and you’re still close enough to the tools to build the model or run the campaign yourself.
  • Depth in paid media, SEO and AEO, lifecycle and email, and web CRO
  • Proven track record building and scaling demand in B2B SaaS, PLG, or marketplace environments, ideally with both enterprise and self-serve motions.
  • Strong command of measurement: attribution modeling, experiment design, and funnel analysis, with comfort in tools such as GA4, Amplitude, Looker, or Mode.
  • Experience with CRM and marketing automation platforms (for example Salesforce, HubSpot, Marketo, Klaviyo, Iterable, or Braze).
  • Clear, direct communication with both a working team and an executive audience, including the ability to defend a plan and change your mind on evidence.
  • Experience marketing to or through creators, or in the social, influencer, or commerce space, is a bonus.
  • Experience partnering closely with Sales on ABM or enterprise pipeline is a bonus.

How you work:

  • Driven by Impact: You deliver results that matter—prioritizing high-value work, meeting deadlines, and adapting quickly while keeping outcomes clear.
  • Strategic & Customer-Centric: You anticipate risks and opportunities, connect decisions to long-term growth, and build trust through proactive insights.
  • Curious & Growth-Oriented: You seek knowledge, ask sharp questions, and apply learnings fast—challenging the status quo with a mindset of improvement.
  • Collaborative & Resilient: You thrive in change by staying resourceful, solution-focused, and positive—removing roadblocks, sharing insights, and keeping morale high.
  • Accountable & Honest: You own your work, hold yourself and others to a high bar, and use transparent feedback to drive growth.
  • Emotionally Intelligent: You build trust through empathy and collaboration, foster inclusion, and inspire others with grit, optimism, and integrity.

What this role involves

About DonorsChoose

DonorsChoose is an education nonprofit ensuring every US public school student has the classroom resources they need to learn, grow, and thrive.

Founded by a teacher in 2000, DonorsChoose connects educators with a nationwide community of supporters who believe investing in students today will transform tomorrow. Educators request the materials they know their students need, and donors can choose the classroom, community, or cause they want to support. Since our founding, donors have supported 90% of US public schools. Every request is vetted, resources are delivered to classrooms, and donors can see the impact of their support through transparent reporting and updates from students and teachers. Raising $1.9 billion for classrooms, DonorsChoose has earned top ratings from Charity Navigator, GuideStar, and CharityWatch for its transparency, trust, and impact. Our dedicated team works from across the United States to turn resources into opportunities for students and teachers.

About the Marketing Team

The Marketing team helps more people discover, support, and return to DonorsChoose to ensure teachers across the country can access the resources their students need. By connecting donor generosity with teacher needs, Marketing strengthens the DonorsChoose Marketplace and advances the organization’s mission of expanding educational opportunity for students in every community.

Working closely with Product, Development, Analytics, and Executive Leadership, Marketing connects donor needs with organizational priorities to strengthen the DonorsChoose Marketplace and expand opportunities for teachers and classrooms nationwide.

About the Role

The Vice President, Marketplace Growth is responsible for the performance, health, and long-term evolution of the DonorsChoose Marketplace—the ecosystem that connects teachers seeking classroom resources with donors who want to support them. This executive leader defines the organization’s Marketplace growth strategy, bringing together audience insight, product partnership, marketing strategy, and data-informed decision making to strengthen both sides of the Marketplace, deepen donor engagement, and expand equitable access to classroom resources for teachers and students.

Reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer, this role serves as Marketing’s primary strategic partner to Product, shaping Marketplace investment priorities and ensuring product strategy is informed by donor needs, teacher insights, market opportunities, and measurable business outcomes. As a key member of the Marketing leadership team, this role partners closely with leaders across Product, Development, Analytics, Finance, and Executive Leadership to align priorities, make strategic tradeoff decisions, and ensure Marketplace investments deliver meaningful results for both teachers and donors.

Success in this role requires balancing immediate fundraising opportunities with the long-term health of the Marketplace, building strong cross-functional partnerships, and fostering a culture of experimentation, learning, and continuous improvement. • Partner with the Chief Marketing Officer and cross-functional leaders to establish Marketplace investment priorities, annual objectives, and success metrics.
  • Influence enterprise decision-making by aligning Marketplace strategy across Product, Marketing, Development, Finance, Analytics, and Executive Leadership.

Drive Marketplace Growth & Performance

  • Develop strategies that increase donor acquisition, engagement, retention, recurring giving, reactivation, upgrades, and lifetime value.
  • Champion a culture of experimentation, measurement, and continuous optimization.
  • Partner with Analytics to establish performance metrics, evaluate results, and identify new growth opportunities.
  • Balance immediate fundraising opportunities with long-term health of the Marketplace, strengthening outcomes for both donors and teachers.
  • Define the organization’s Marketplace growth strategy and translate it into clear priorities for functional leaders, ensuring teams are aligned around shared goals while empowering them to own execution.

Partner with Product & Drive Go-to-Market

  • Ensure new product capabilities create measurable Marketplace value.
  • Serve as Marketing primary strategic partner to Product throughout product planning and roadmap development.
  • Represent the voice of multiple audiences including teachers, donors, partners, vendors when evaluating new product opportunities for the multi-sided marketplace..
  • Identify Marketplace opportunities that influence product investment priorities.
  • Partner with Product to evaluate new capabilities, define success measures, and assess business impact.
  • Ensure new features and enhancements are successfully positioned, launched, adopted, and measured.

Lead the Marketplace Growth Organization

  • Build a high-performing team capable of delivering sustained Marketplace growth.
  • Lead the leaders responsible for Digital Growth & Marketing, Product Marketing, and Mid-Level Giving.
  • Align teams around shared Marketplace objectives and organizational priorities.
  • Develop high-performing managers through coaching, clear expectations, and thoughtful prioritization.
  • Foster a collaborative, data-informed culture that encourages experimentation, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Build organizational capability that enables the Marketplace Growth function to scale alongside the organization.

Qualifications

  • Have 10+ years of related work experience in growth, lifecycle marketing, product marketing, digital marketing, Marketplace strategy, or revenue growth in a high-growth technology company, digital Marketplace, or mission-driven organization.
  • Understand how to grow multi-sided marketplaces by balancing customer acquisition, engagement, retention, and lifetime value.
  • Have significant experience partnering closely with Product organizations to influence roadmaps, launch new capabilities, and improve customer experiences.
  • Have successfully balanced customer experience, product strategy, and business performance to drive sustainable growth.
  • Enjoys using data, experimentation, and customer insights to solve complex business challenges.
  • Have successfully led managers and built high-performing, cross-functional teams.
  • Are comfortable operating at both strategic and operational levels, moving seamlessly between long-term vision and execution.
  • Build trust through collaboration, curiosity, and sound judgment while influencing without relying solely on formal authority.
